WOMANPRODUCER: A conversation with Neko Case, Suzi Analogue, Zola Jesus & Miho Hatori

A panel discussion on the topic of music production, with participants Neko Case, Suzi Analogue, Zola Jesus and Miho Hatori, each of whom are artists who self-produce their own recordings. The data on female performers who are the authors of their own sound is often skewed by imagery and information about these artists as characters as opposed to creators. This panel provides a platform for conversation about the process of creating the sonic spaces inside of which artists perform. It will be moderated by Melissa Dyne and Khaela Maricich, of The Blow.

The Center for Contemporary Opera in cooperation with Urbanvessel (Canada) presents the world premiere of Sweat, an a cappella opera by New Zealand-Canadian composer Juliet Palmer and librettist Anna Chatterton.
Sweat is a kaleidoscope of characters and stories collected from factories around the world. The work offers a window into the lives of the unseen millions who work to clothe us and the high-flying designers whose fantasies feed the fashion industry.
Featuring Jacqueline Horner Kwiatek, Larissa Koniuk, Shabnam Kalbasi, Eric McKeever, and Patrick McNally in the title roles. Conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya and directed by Giselle Ty.
Joshua Winstead presents MMXX

Joshua Winstead is an American singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, as well as a member of the critically acclaimed rock band Metric. As the bass player in Metric he has contributed to their 6 albums and toured worldwide with the dynamic live band. In June of 2016 he debuted his first solo album, MMXX(written, produced and performed by Winstead), and released it on his own record label Royal Cut Records. MMXX has been referred to as “mesmerizing, sincere uplifting soulful pop, a lush jewel of a composition by a true visionary, rich and powerful, showcasing all of his musical and songwriting gifts.”

Jazz for Kids: Unusual Creatures

Odd animals like blobfish, elephant shrews, giant Chinese salamanders, and other bizarre beasts slither, hop, swim, and jump in projected images and videos while being portrayed in music by author and composer Michael Hearst. He takes the audience on a fun, interactive investigation through the kingdom of weird animals with the help of his 5-piece band and a variety of quirky instruments.

Slavic Soul Party! celebrates 50 years since Duke Ellington’s and Billy Strayhorn’s masterpiece, The Far East Suite was released. The band re-imagines the sounds encapsulated in this timeless classic.An extended version of the band will also be performing “The Living Need Light, The Dead Need Music” which springs from shared funeral and brass traditions in Vietnam and the Mississippi River Delta, exploring the liminal spaces between life/death, water/earth, and tradition/innovation.

Ivan Llanes is a fantastic singer, percussionist, composer, and bandleader coming from Camagüey, Cuba. With music ranging from traditional Cuban Son, modern latin jazz, and contemporary styles, Ivan is a musician who embraces a rich rhythmic tradition while pushing his music forward.
We are excited to bring Ivan Llanes and the Cuban Way to our Table Music series. Performing a mix of traditional Cuban and folkloric songs, latin jazz centerpieces, and his own compositions, Ivan bridges the gap between the past and the future of Cuban music. With our Table Music Series, Ivan will be presenting his group in a unique intimate environment.
