Sidewalk Party: Hear Be Dragons
May 23, 12-4PM at National Sawdust
Found Sound Nation/El Puente/Assume Vivid Astro Focus event
Found Sound Nation (FSN) is one of National Sawdust’s twelve groups in residency; it is a unique organization in that they partners with local youth, social organizations and music venues in order to engage people from all walks of life in the interactive process of collaborative music, audio, and video production. The final result is to give voice to underrepresented communities, unlock the creative potential of youth, and bridge cultural and political divides.
In spring 2015, Found Sound Nation has partnered with an alumni of their OneBeat international music exchange, South Africa-based musician Kyla Rose-Smith and her partner Hannah Loewenthal, on a neighborhood soundmapping project titled Hear Be Dragons. This unique experiential education project brings together young people to explore the world of sound within their respective communities and map the sonic landscape of their lives.
National Sawdust, Found Sound Nation and El Puente Williamsburg Leadership Center, an activist community center in Williamsburg, partnered for a special workshop called Hear be Dragons on May 23, 2015 from 12-4.
About Hear Be Dragons
Found Sound Nation recently completed the Cape Town portion of Hear Be Dragons with wonderful results. They worked in the township of Nyanga at the Zolani Youth Center, and with 11 terrific participants created original maps, 3 original songs, and a handful of tracks from Thrit Two Street Studios in Nyanga and downtown Cape Town. The participants also spent a day at Red Bull Studios in Cape Town, finishing the songs they had worked on for 2 weeks.
The objective of mapping through sound elicited some very deep discussions and ideas in the group, which they will now bring to our local community partner, El Puente, and their students. The Cape Town participants were really excited to see & hear from the New Yorkers, which happened through filmed video introductions!
The Brooklyn part of our workshops, which culminated on Saturday, May 23rd at National Sawdust, and which accompanied our mural unveiling at the National Sawdust building by the famed muralist Eli Sudbrack.
