The John Zorn Commissioning Series celebrates The Stone, Zorn’s revolutionary venue “dedicated to the experimental and avant-garde”, which served as a vital spot for new music in the East Village for over a decade. Held on the last Wednesday of every month, National Sawdust honors the spirit of The Stone, hosting artists selected by John Zorn presenting world premieres of new works.
This month’s concert features improvising guitarist, banjo player, vocalist, and poet Wendy Eisenberg. For this program, they have written a suite of pieces for improvisers, to be performed by their collaborative quintet Gloyd. Gloyd consists of Eisenberg on guitar, Donald Warner Shaw on saxophones and bass, Andy Allen on saxophones, bassoon, and flute, Neil Cloaca Young on drums, and Ruth Garbus on vocals.

The Artists
Wendy Eisenberg is an improvising guitarist. Their debut record as a solo improviser, Its Shape Is Your Touch, and their trio album, The Machinic Unconscious, with Ches Smith and Trevor Dunn, were both released in 2018, on VDSQ and Tzadik respectively. They have also released an album of songs for voice and guitar, entitled Time Machine, on Feeding Tube Records.
They have written and performed in numerous projects, including the critically acclaimed band Birthing Hips, described by NPR as “brainy, noisy punk based in sonic adventure, technical mastery, and rejection of the status quo.” They lead a trio, Editrix, which explores similar parameters from an avant-metal perspective. Wendy’s work as an improviser has led to collaborations with John Zorn, Matt Mitchell, Trevor Dunn, Ted Reichman, Joe Morris, Damon Smith, and Weasel Walter.
