“I was honored to conduct the concert in front of the Lincoln Monument for Bill Clinton’s inauguration. Up until recently, I thought I might conduct Hillary’s inauguration as well. Nevertheless, or perhaps because, I still felt I had to contribute. I’m not rich, nor am I inclined to shout in the streets. But I do write music.
The piece I wrote sets two of Hillary’s speeches—her announcement that she was running as a candidate in 2007 and her concession to Donald Trump, a few short weeks ago—and turned them into a classical Scena–an extended art song. I wanted to involve as many artists from the classical community as possible and split up all the lines. I reached out to colleagues and the response was overwhelming.
Given the sheer number of artists participating, Camille Zamora, Song for Hope, and I decided to put The Hillary Speeches together as a film: each artist would be shot individually and then we’d edit it together.
I knew there was no time more appropriate to premiere this work other than the exact time that Donald Trump is inaugurated as POTUS. Camille called Paola Prestini, Executive and Creative Director at National Sawdust, and Paola agreed to live-stream the performance and host it publicly and free for the public so that people could experience this work on a big screen.
I’m not rich…but protest has many forms.”
