The Revolution is a performance series highlighting Brooklyn & Harlem based artists + musicians that not only represent the core of independent pop culture but who currently stand in the breeding ground of evolution within their genre.
This local musical movement empowers community, change, and activism through performance and unity amongst the arts. Once a month, three different artists showcasing three different genres have a chance to spread love, light, and awareness through their music and their stories. This series supports revolutionary artistry and how important music is to healing, in all aspects of life.
As a part of VOL. 45, The Revolution will feature three incredible live performances from local artists Childish Japes, Maitri, and Michael Wingate.

The Artists
Childish Japes is equal parts collective, band, and art project—committed to unapologetic musical exploration and blurring of genre lines. The composition and arranging process is heavily collaborative and equally inspired by each of the three members: Asher Kurtz, Jed Lingat, and JP Bouvet. Their 3rd album to be released in 2020, focuses on instrumental compositions and features David Leon on Alto Sax and other woodwinds, and Christian Li on Piano and Synthesizers.
Maitri (”my tree”) is a word with roots in Sanskrit, often translated as loving-kindness. Growing out of the Chicago music scene, the project has become a collective songwriting outfit for both Caroline Davis and Ben Hoffmann. Featuring soulful vocals over polyrhythmic and funky grooves, the group also uses experimental sounds and effects to create a lush sonic landscape. Currently accompanied by David Frazier on drums, Maitri is the soundtrack for the inevitable ushering in of the new world order.
Michael Wingate hails from Union Beach, NJ, where his single mother raised him and his four siblings. Like many other Soul/R&B vocalists, Michael began his musical journey in the four walls of the church, where he first learned how to sing in choirs. He performed all throughout his childhood and adolescence: singing in church, playing in school band, and performing in school musicals. Despite being without a home for 14 months between his junior and senior years of high school, Michael persevered and was blessed to be accepted to Harvard, where he continued to sing in various groups. He graduated with a degree in philosophy, and shortly after, moved to Harlem to pursue music as a full-time career. The music you’ll hear tonight will be a combination of the essences of the highs and lows of his life, endeavoring to make you smile, yell, well up with emotion, shed a tear, bob your head, tap your feet, dance like no one’s watching, dance like the world is watching, and ultimately, have a good time.
