Psychedelic-tinged Americana singer Rodes Rollins brings her “dusty folk-pop” (Billboard) to National Sawdust for a special evening presented by Women That Rock. Rollins has worked with collaborators of Devendra Banhart and Weezer, and now she is joined by The Shacks, Lip Talk, DJ duo Box of Paints, and more special guest to be announced. The Artists
If a spaghetti western and Nancy Sinatra had a love child, it would be Rodes Rollins. The young singer could fool you into thinking she’s from another time, care of her haunting vocals and sprawling psychedelic-tinged Americana rhythms.
The rising musician released her debut EP Young Adult in 2017 with the help of producer Alex Goose (Weezer): a coming-of-age tale full of vintage rock, ethereal pop and wavy melodies. Many of the songs were inspired by her first love who had a momentary lapse in judgment and was put in jail and later deported. With a story so heavy and personal, she spent the five-track EP analyzing the lack of humanity there was surrounding his situation. Now Rollins is ready to introduce the world to more of her self-described “cowgirl poetry.”
Since then, Rollins has focused on opening up the narrative. For most of her newer releases, Rollins recruited Portugal. The Man’s Kane Richotte to play drums. This isn’t the first time she’s worked with big players in the game: Rollins’ recordings have featured accomplished artists like Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, Matthew Compton of Electric Guest, Noah Georgeson of Devendra Banhart. Major Lazer’s Jillionaire has even championed Rollins over the years, helping facilitate a collaboration between she and producer Branko for his album Atlas. And now, throughout the summer and fall months of 2019, Rollins is set to release her latest project, featuring new musicians such as renowned Brazilian guitarist, Fabiano Do Nascimento.
LIP TALK is the project and alternate identity of frontwoman Sarah K. Pedinotti, and D A Y S is her debut album. “I imagined characters in the songs like scenes in a movie, emotion expressed like colors on a canvas,” Pedinotti says of D A Y S, and you can see it in your own mind’s eye on a track like “Artemis,” in which deep blue saxes tattoo black sheets of synth noise, the whole track iridescent and shimmering like an oil slick. Throughout, Pedinotti’s production mixes singsong simplicity with densely ambitious art rock, charming and challenging her audience in equal measure.
Pedinotti first started singing as a pre-teen, performing at her parents’ family restaurant and jazz club in Saratoga Springs, New York. The restaurant became a hotspot for music in the area, and as a girl Pedinotti got to meet and perform with Jazz legends as they passed through town to drop in on sets. The past couple years have found Pedinotti performing with musicians as stylistically diverse as psych-noise group Cosmicide, rock band Okkervil River, experimental-pop band Kalbells; on D A Y S, you can hear her drawing from all those influences and more to craft something distinctly her own.
