Caravan Gitane and National Sawdust invite you to a special Halloween film screening with live score of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a 1920 silent horror film that shocked the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. Considered by many to be the first true horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari follows a mad hypnotist who commits murders through a somnambulist who sleeps in a coffin. It unfolds in an nightmarish landscape of crooked backdrops, harsh, oblique lines, and painted shadows. After nearly 100 years, this twisted and bizarre visual style is unmatched.
This film screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 4K restoration scanned from the camera negative, which has been almost fully preserved at the German Federal Film Archive. Live rescored and performed by composer and electronic artist Ricardo Romaneiro and featuring Vasko Dukovski (clarinet), Manami Mizumoto (violin), Hannah Sumner (singer), Justin Abrams (cello), and David Zisa (modular synth).
Following the film, Halloween celebrations continue with an eclectic afterparty inspired by thematic materials of the film, featuring an ambient sound experience from Soundwalk Collective with mind-blowing visuals by Brian Close, a live concert from VANDANA with a performance by Coen Aerst, and finally, a dance party by a mystery guest DJ with visuals by Rhizome. Artists throughout the evening will make use of National Sawdust’s immersive Constellation and Spacemap sound systems by Meyer Sound.

The Artists
Composer and electronic artist Ricardo Romaneiro was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and moved to the US at an early age. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Romaneiro writes music that synthesizes his major influences and passions: classical and electronic music. The New York Times described his work as “a blissful and compelling mix of Minimalist-derived rhythmic ecstasy and nightclub beats”. His music has been featured, performed, and commissioned by an eclectic range of institutions, festivals, and projects, such as the Museum of Modern Art’s Summergarden Series, BAM, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolis Ensemble, Wordless Music, Ensemble LPR, the Nu Deco Ensemble, the House of Creatives Festival, the Electric Paradise Festival, ECCE, the American Composers Orchestra, Quintet of the Americas, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Colorado Ballet at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, and the Sacramento Ballet. His work has been featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Vice/Creators Project, Esquire Magazine, Brooklyn Magazine, Untapped Cities, Vogue, and Edible Manhattan. A recipient of the ASCAP Rudy Perez Songwriting Scholarship, he earned a bachelor’s degree in composition from the Manhattan School of Music and a masters degree in composition from The Juilliard School. www.romaneiro.com
Soundwalk Collective is an experimental sound collective founded by Stephan Crasneanscki in New York City since 2000 and joined by Simone Merli in 2008. The Collective currently operates in a continuously rotating constellation of sound artists and musicians.
Their approach to composition combines anthropology, ethnography, non-linear narrative, psycho-geography, the observation of nature, and explorations in recording and synthesis. Distinguished collaborators include American singer, songwriter and poet Patti Smith, Ethiopian Jazz musician Mulatu Astatke, American photographer Nan Goldin, French-Swiss film director Jean-Luc Godard and French director, actor, singer, songwriter Charlotte Gainsbourg.
They will be opening the exploration for the party on Thursday , Oct 31st after the Dr. Caligari Movie Screening, creating an array of soundscapes, mixing vinyls with recordings, synthesis and visuals that will set the tone for this most anticipated night of haunting mysteries!
Brian Close puts together a sort of creative ecosystem. As Georgia,he makes music and video and design work, both for himself and a range of client-collaborators. Across his prodigious output there remains a sense of continuity—the smaller, more experimental projects counterbalance the high-profile promotional spots, and the whole thing holds itself in orbit, with its own gravity. To name a few, here one of his latest heavy-duty visual collaborations, the stunning videos ‘Singing Sands’ and ‘The Time of the Night’ with Soundwalk Collective and queen Patti Smith.
Brian a freak of nature in his artistry, is a master of cosmic noodling, tessellated undulations, vocal wave-shape projections, pure trance, harmonic freakery, minimal rhythmic explorations, mutate tech funk, spontané pattern making & pattern breaking.
Fusing elements of synth wave electronica with mesmeric avant-pop, Vandana’s music embraces womanhood and otherness from inside the mouth of a cave. The singer, producer and visual artist brings her process to life via slow-dripping, throbbing synths and poignant vocal melodies creating an atmosphere that’s haunting and exotic.
Inspired by musical pioneers like Aphex Twin, Thom Yorke and Miles Davis as well as the vibrancy of Bollywood, the gothicism of The Cure and of Fever Ray, Vandana also takes her cues from purveyors of subversion like Edgar Allan Poe, Lars Von Trier and Henry Miller.
Her journey from India to London to Brooklyn has influenced her otherworldly sound which arrives steeped in the eccentricities of her ancient DNA as well as in vehicles of abstract expression and experimentation.
