Ma*JiD
The Rite of Strings
3:30pm doors • 4pm show
About
Four-time DownBeat Rising Jazz Violinist Ma*JiD fuses his brand of rhythmically pulsating fusion trap-jazz with the elegance of the classical string concertino in The Rite of Strings, an inspired program of riotously freewheeling sensibility.
A full string ensemble and driving rhythm section play music from the pen of legendary jazz violinists Stuff Smith, Jean-Luc Ponty, Noel Pointer, and Michal Urbaniak interspersed with original compositions by Ma*JiD, featuring angelic string sounds, electric bass grooves, lush harmonic textures, layered electric sounds, and hip-hop drums. Brooklyn rapper Dyme-A-Duzin will make a guest appearance, as will other special guests. Don’t miss this high-energy, high-concept combination of the best that these artists have to offer.
“Ma*Jid’s ability to make impossible intuitive leaps from conceptions of sound that are bound by acceptable classical norms of mathematical reason to an outward-bound orbit that only someone who experiences the depths of musical possibility can translate into the sound of melody. Naturally, this will drive the violinist’s improvising mind into a rarefied realm where few can even imagine being.” — Raul Da Gama, JazzDaGama

Majid’s music is an eclectic blend of styles and influences, drawing from European classical, jazz, and hip-hop. In 2018, Majid released his greatly anticipated second studio album entitled Sound of a Flower at National Sawdust to a sold-out crowd, and has since seen great radio success. Also, 2018 found Majid alongside Harlem rapper A$AP Ferg in a YouTubeRED series entitled Sugar. Ma*Jid will be releasing a collaboration recording with Brooklyn MC Dyme-a-Duzin in the spring of 2019.
