The John Zorn Commissioning Series celebrates Zorn’s revolutionary venue, The Stone, a non-profit venue that was “dedicated to the experimental and avant-garde,” and served as a vital spot for new-music in Manhattan’s Alphabet City for over a decade. Held on the last Wednesday of every month, National Sawdust honors the spirit of the Stone, hosting the world premiere of new works.
A wealth of talent from Indigenous America takes the stage, as celebrated White Mountain Apache violinist Laura Ortman performs in collaboration with multi-instrumentalists Raven Chacon (Navajo) and Timothy Long (Choctaw). As a long-time performer and master of indigenous tradition, Ortman has performed and educated audiences around the United Stated and beyond, from the Whitney Museum to the San Francisco MoMA to France’s Centre Georges Pompidou.
Ortman and Chacon are long time collaborators of improvised recordings and have performed together in New York, New Mexico, Toronto, Vancouver, Berlin and California. Timothy Long was the conductor and co-producer of the Coast Orchestra, an all-Native American music ensemble founded in 2008 by Laura Ortman.
