About the Show
What is the experience of your world seeing you as the other? Not for a day, or for a week, but forever?
National Sawdust Artist-in-Residence and independent Hip Hop recording and performance artist Latasha Alcindor is here to tell her story in ALL A DREAM, her multimedia performance art memoir that takes you first-hand into Alcindor’s deep-rooted upbringing in New York City.
ALL A DREAM is a visual and musically-led memoir of Alcindor’s deep-rooted upbringing in NYC, told through lyrical anecdotes about growing up amidst constant change and trauma within inner city life. ALL A DREAM is a personal, yet inclusive creative effort through the lens of a native NYC woman of color sharing her perspectives, addressing social issues, and exploring the never-ending shift of her self-identity.
Part live music, part dance, part documentary, ALL A DREAM is a 21st century mosaic that will leave audiences with an intimate, raw understanding of living as “the other”.
About LA
Latasha Alcindor, also informally addressed as “LA,” is an independent artist based out of New York City. Her form-free art travels through a wide range of inspiration found in Experimental, Dance, Jazz, Electronic and Hip Hop music. LA’s energetic calls and performance-based sound have opened doors for her to perform at culturally prestigious events like SXSW, A3C, and Manifesto. In the beginning of 2016, she performed as the headlining act for Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturdays and had her music featured on Refinery 29’s show The Skinny. Latasha finds resonance in speaking on political, social and cultural experiences in her music, promoting a much needed agenda for those looking to find inner peace, specifically young women of color. With all of her depth, the beauty in LA’s creative style exists due to the juxtaposition of both her thought-provoking, influential messages and her blithe, unbound sound that carries in strong vibration. Her journey is continuous, and with a nonrestrictive formula it actively speaks to those that come across her experiences.
About Lafayette Stokely
South Caroline born, Florida raised MC Lafayette Stokely continues his musical journey. Starting at the age of 17, Lafayette began to develop his own skills as a wordsmith stemming from his affinity with the storytelling styles of artist like J. Cole, Nas, and Jay Electronica. Lafayette began developing his sounds early on with fellow crew members The Solstice, showcasing his rhymes in their very first project titled “MF Wonders”. Receiving positive feedback from online publications coupled with the use to develop his craft, Lafayette decided to give it a turn as a solo act. On October 29th 2012, Lafayette gives us “Life’s journey” a project that’s everything the title entails, a brief insight into the life of Stokely with stories about his move to New York, pressures to be successful in his craft and his general perspective on life as he knows it.
One year later on the same day, Lafayette gives us the second installment of Life’s Journey with “Life Goes On”. On this project, Lafayette sheds more light into the life of Stokely, touching on everything from his southern roots, losing loved ones, his love life and why his time spent in New York was so necessary. All while exuding a newly found confidence and making it clear that he’s not just here for a spot in the game, but the top spot.
Fast foreward to 2015, Lafayette and his fiancé welcome two beautiful girls into he world. As expenses get higher and spaces get tighter, Lafayette is faced with a crucial decision. Constantly replaying his very own bars in his head “Never moving back to Florida thats my last resort” Lafayette ultimately makes a very difficult decision but the best one for his family, and that is to move back home.
Now back under the Florida sun, Lafayette with reservations being perceived as a failure he vowed to hit his hometown of Orlando and work until the city knows his name. Taking notes on the current climate of the music business. Lafayette decided to better his live performances. Hitting stages throughout Florida opening for some of your favorite artists, sparingly dropping songs by design all white carefully crafting his next body of work. As it turns out the move back to the sunshine state ended up being exactly what Lafayette needed. Reunited with fellow Soulstice crew member/producer Ross Munroe, Lafayette is gearing up to present us with his next chapter of life as he knows it.
