About
Heralded by the New Yorker as “distinguished young creators who work in diverse styles,” Artists-in-Residence Kinds of Kings are a collective of six multifaceted composers who actively advocate for underrepresented voices in the music landscape. In the first of four concerts this season, they present Shelley Washington’s raucous electric guitar quartet The Workers’ Dreadnought, performed by Brooklyn-based group Real Loud. Taking inspiration from the left-wing newspaper of the same name, the piece explores the continual, backbreaking crusade for intersectional equality across the globe. The evening opens with a conversation with composer Angélica Negrón about the compositional process and representation in classical and new music.

Described by the New Yorker as “distinguished young creators who work in diverse styles”, the collective focuses on amplifying and advocating for underheard voices and producing immersive and inclusive work.
In the 2018–19 season Kinds of Kings had concert dates with New York-based chamber groups Metropolis Ensemble and Desdemona Ensemble, the ZAFA Collective in Chicago, and the St Louis Symphony as part of the orchestra’s Pulitzer Series. In the 2019–20 season the collective will collaborate with award-winning Australian ensemble Rubiks Collective.
