Sonic
Originally hailing from the Bay Area, Sonic is an innovative and formidable vocalist and creative artisan currently residing in New York City. A recent contestant on The Voice Season 8, Sonic’s soulfully versatile and dynamic sound secured her a spot on Christina Aguilera’s team and ultimately catapulted her to a spot in the show’s top 20. The very essence of who Sonic is comes from the fact that she is completely deaf in one ear. The name ‘Sonic’ represents the ability to break barriers, and grasp the positive influence and embodiment of her gifts and abilities through the art and expression of song.
A natural creator and an artist of abstract makeup, costume design, and custom handmade jewelry, Sonic is a creative force to be reckoned with. But undoubtedly, her greatest and most evocative passion is her music. Sonic lives and thrives off of the art of music, ‘the art of being’. A huge part of Sonic’s artistic upbringing comes from her parents, who were actively involved in the church music ministry, while older brothers introduced her to the roots of hiphop, rap and beatboxing. It was not too long before Sonic realized at a very young age that music was her calling.
As a teen, Sonic was involved in several talent competitions including the American Junior Idols. Signed to an indie label at the young age of 13, Sonic recorded a 12 track EP and soon began to create a name for herself doing mini school tours and grabbing every opportunity to perform all around the Bay Area and Northern CA. Sonic has performed the National Anthem for the world Champion SF Giants and has performed at various festivals and major events such as San Francisco’s Carnaval. Later this summer, she will be an opening performer on a mini tour with CRSB. Inspired by artists past and present like Alicia Keys, Jazmine Sullivan, Pharrell Williams, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Sade, Sonic incorporates these influences into her abstract R&B Soulful sound. Staying true to her Bay Area roots, Sonic recently released her three track Mixtape titled ‘WAV’ in the summer of 2015, and is set to release an original, more in depth project, later this summer. Samora Pinderhughes Presents: The Transformations Suite
Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a worldrenowned pianist and composer. Samora has performed in venues including the White House, the Blue Note, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with artists including Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, Jose James, Harvey Mason, and Emily King.
Samora was raised in the Bay Area and moved to New York to study jazz at The Juilliard School. He is the director and creator of The Transformations Suite, an acclaimed project combining music, theatre, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within the communities of the African Diaspora. An album of this music, as well as an accompanying short film, is due out in fall 2016. Samora’s other projects include: I’m Still Here: Letters on Trauma & Healing (prod. Institute for Arts and Civic Dialogue); The James Baldwin Essays: Examining the American Dream Narrative, commissioned by Harlem Stage; The Migration of Protest: Meditations on Jacob Lawrence, for the Museum of Modern Art; and Billy Strayhorn: The Music of the Sutherland Period, for the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
A composer for film and theatre, Samora is the music director for an upcoming play at Soho Rep and is a Sundance Composers Lab fellow for film scoring. He is also a member of Blackout for Human Rights, and was musical director for their 2016 #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. “The Transformations Suite”, composed and directed by Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes, is an acclaimed project combining music, theatre, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within the communities of the African Diaspora. Continuing in the tradition of artists such as Bob Marley, Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday and Tupac Shakur, the suite paints a musical picture of the current state of social inequality and injustice in the United States and beyond. The Transformations Suite connects contemporary issues, such as the prison industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the history of revolutionary movements of color, building a bridge between the past and the future. The Transformations Suite has been performed throughout Brazil and the U.S., at venues including the American Museum of Natural History, the Harlem Arts Festival, Juilliard, NYU, Joe’s Pub, the Jazz Gallery, and Columbia University. Most recently, the project was featured as part of Blackout’s #MLKNow event, which was viewed by over 500,000 people and trended #1 on Twitter. Centered in the belief that there is a soundtrack to every revolution, the vision for this piece is that it will foster dialogue on social justice issues throughout the world, show how art can create social change, contribute to the powerful growing movement on behalf of black lives around the country, and empower all people – especially youth – to make their voices heard.
FREELANCE
Freelance is an American band based in harlem, NY. Their sound is influenced by genres such as electronic fusion, jazz, alternative rock, and neo soul, to name a few. By design, the name itself is the best way to define their genre, considering they are not committed to any specific music style. Their sound is Freelance. The band currently consists of founding leaders, Tim “Smithsoneon” Smith (Vocals) and Chad Selph (Keyboards), along with Craig Hill (saxophone), Yasser Tejeda (guitar), Justin Tyson (drums), and David Ginyard (bass). Each band member possesses an extensive resume, reflecting a wide range of established artists such as Jesse J, Kenny Garrett, Walter Beasley, Prince Royce, Solange, Esperanza Spalding, and many more. The origins of Freelance began at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, where they developed their craft while establishing close friendships. It is this friendship that propelled them to create their own sound and begin to perform around the greater area of Boston. Through a new progressive sound, they intend to uplift spirits and raise awareness, while exuding a familiar energy that people can relate to. They intend to inspire their audience to live freely and pursue their passions; to “Live Freelance”.
