About the Artists
Cantori New York
A three-time winner of the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, Cantori has repeatedly won recognition from the American Prize. Cantori has established a strong reputation for artistic excellence, innovative programming and imaginative collaborations with distinguished musicians and actors. Cantori’s collaborators have included Kathleen Chalfant, Maryann Plunkett, Nadia Sirota, Bradley and Douglas Balliett, the Cassatt String Quartet, Prism Saxophone Quartet, and the Gregg Smith Singers. Appearances have included the opening season of Zankel Hall with Michael Tilson Thomas, Great Performers at Lincoln Center, World Financial Center Arts & Events, multiple collaborations at Lincoln Center (Rose Theater, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall) with the verismo company Teatro Grattacielo, and two productions with the American Ballet Theater.
Cantori’s recordings, on labels such as Arsis, Albany, Newport Classics and PGM, include Paul Crabtree’s The Metamorphoses, Echoes and Shadows (contemporary American choral works), FIVE by Michael Dellaira, and the first CD recording of Frank Martin’s Le Vin Herbé, which was an Opera News Editors’ Choice.
Mark Shapiro
Mark Shapiro has been Artistic Director of Cantori New York for 26 years. A five-time ASCAP Award winner for programming, Shapiro is a versatile conductor equally at home in orchestral, operatic and choral conducting. He is Music Director of the Prince Edward Island Symphony and the Cecilia Chorus of New York, which performs twice annually in Carnegie Hall. Maestro Shapiro’s opera credits include multiple appearances with Juilliard Vocal Arts, American Opera Projects, the Center for Contemporary Opera, the Opera Company of Middlebury, and Underworld Opera. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, the Rubin Museum, World Financial Center (Arts & Events), Guggenheim Museum (Works & Process), and the Roman amphitheater at Vaison-la-Romaine, France. His radio appearances have included WQXR, WNYC, and Sirius.
He has recorded for Albany, Arsis, Newport Classics, and PGM. Maestro Shapiro’s present and past academic affiliations include the Evening Division of the Juilliard School, Mannes School of Music, and LIU Post, where he is an Associate Professor of Music and two-time recipient of the Krasnoff Award, the University’s highest academic honor.
