Revert to Sea

National Sawdust artist-in-residence Yuka C. Honda presents a brand new multimedia work-in-progress based on the writings of Japanese author Ryu Murakami. Murakami, while not well known in the United States, is one of Japan’s most celebrated and iconic living literary figures. Inspired by his writings, in particular the novel Coin Locker Babies, Honda has conceived an evening-length work of music and video for an all-star ensemble of avant-garde improvisers: twin brothers Nels Cline (Wilco) on guitar and Alex Cline on drums, downtown composer and performer Zeena Parkins (Björk) on harp, and the phenomenally versatile Devin Hoff on upright bass. Video and animations provide a visual score for the evening, manipulated live by video artist Brian Close (of the audio-visual design team Georgia).

Yuka C. Honda

Yuka C. Honda is a Japanese composer/musician and producer residing in New York City. She is best known for the band Cibo Matto, which she co-founded with Miho Hatori in 1994 and in which Honda created a unique one-man band sound by triggering samples ‘live’. Honda released three solo albums (on the Tzadik label) and has produced recordings by Sean Lennon, Martha Wainwright, YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND and Cibo Matto. She has recorded and performed with a wide range of musicians such as Yoko Ono, Bernie Worrell, Marc Ribot, Laurie Anderson, Sean Lennon, Yoshimi (of The Boredoms), Nels Cline, Kimbra, Thomas Bartlett and Trixie Whitley among others.
