The Scheherazade Project presented by: PUBLIQuartet Hollands Amy Khoshbin
The Scheherazade Project (TSP) takes its inspiration from the feminist icon Scheherazade, who uses well-known tales to suit her needs, saving her own life as well as the lives of thousands of women from a virgin-killing king in the classical Persian story One Thousand and One Nights. Reimagined through a contemporary western “lens”, (TSP) conceives a disillusioned dictator wooed by media stories, slowly immersed into the realm of the screen where “reality” and “fiction” become indiscernible. Indie-rock duo HOLLANDS and string quartet PUBLIQuartet integrate rock ‘n’ roll and classical music, merging electronic and acoustic genres via original song and improvisations that pay homage to Rimsky- Korsakov’s symphonic poem Scheherazade. Set alongside live storytelling and multi-channel video projections by Iranian-American artist Amy Khoshbin, (TSP) was commissioned by a 2015 Mpower Grant awarded by the Sphinx Organization and Music Assistance Fund. New York Philharmonic Presents: CONTACT! Young Americans
Brooklyn, will feature chamber music by the next generation of American composers proposed by musicians of the New York Philharmonic, representing a wide range of styles. The program will include Adam Schoenberg’s Fleeting (2008), Nathan Heidelberger’s Halve Time (quartet after Zeno) (2012), Caroline Mallonée’s Unless Acted Upon: Manifestations of Newton’s First Law (2011), and Kate Soper’s Into That World Inverted (2006, rev. 2010).
