CEP is singer / songwriter / producer Caroline Elizabeth Polachek (Chairlift, Ramona Lisa).
Her first instrumental release, Drawing The Target Around The Arrow (2017, Pannonica Records) is a collection of pieces made only using sine waves. Used for sonar systems and hearing tests alike, sine waves are also called “pure tones”, or “single-frequency waves”. In CEP’s hands, these simple sounds are phased and woven into sonic textiles that range from visceral drones to suspended melodies modelled on bird song. Both medicinal and utilitarian, the collection of pieces revolves around the idea that the simple materials at hand are often all you need.
For the sole live performance of Drawing The Target Around The Arrow, CEP will be accompanied by NYC interdisciplinary vocal ensemble Choral Chameleon, directed by Vince Peterson.

These two nights are the first of four installations of The Open Mouth: National Sawdust Choral Series for the 2017 season.
About the Artists
Caroline Polachek
Caroline Polachek is a Brooklyn-based musician and songwriter known as the vocalist for Chairlift, as well as for writing Beyoncé’s single “No Angel.”
“I grew up singing in choir and my biggest musical mentor is my childhood choir director. With this project, National Sawdust Choral Series would provide artists with an opportunity to present the power of group voice from new perspectives. Choral Chameleon
Winner of the 2015 ASCAP/Chorus America award for Adventurous Programming, Choral Chameleon is known for championing New Music for voices within the context of mixed-genre thematic programming and experiments in non-traditional staging.
Founded in 2008, by Artistic Director Vince Peterson, the organization now encompasses: a roster of professional ensemble singers, a volunteer chorus of 30-40 adults and an annual week-long Summer Institute for emerging composers and conductors hosted in Brooklyn.
The culture of the organization marries informality, loving support and joyful curiosity, with the expectation of solidly technical musicianship, constant learning and openness towards the unexpected.
Choral Chameleon’s own programming ethos seeks to dilate audience sensibilities towards the new; by the way it is paired with the familiar and by treating both with the respect they deserve.
Guest appearances this season include: ‘Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music’ at St Ann’s Warehouse, Opera America’s ‘New Opera Showcase’ at Town Hall and Sxip Shirey’s album launch event in January 2017 at National Sawdust.
