About this Program
Friday, August 19th 7pm
Following the release of his beautiful and meditative album Cistern, Los Angeles based composer and multi-instrumentalist Jherek Bischoff performs at National Sawdust for a special album release event. Cisternis an ambient orchestral album that was inspired by time Bischoff spent in an empty, two-million gallon underground water tank with a 45-second reverb decay. Bischoff will be joined by the brilliant NY-based ensemble Contemporaneous, who also performed on the recording.

Throughout my career as a musician, I have committed to learning as many skills related to the field as possible. That has included performing and touring in many different bands around the world, recording and engineering many genres of records, and most recently composing and arranging music for notable symphonies and ensembles around the world. At the root of everything, there has always been a desire to collaborate with other artists, as, not having had a formal musical education, it has been in working with other artists that I have come to learn much about music. In my most recent project Cistern, I recorded with a wonderfully talented NY-based ensemble, Contemporaneous. Cistern is an album of ambient orchestral music, inspired by the unique acoustic qualities of an empty, underground water tank, and also references my childhood experience of growing up on a sailboat, sailing around the world. I have never really focused on visual counterparts to my music in the past, but for this particular project, for music that is quite cinematic, I was inspired to create a long-form video that accompanies the music, images that explore the concepts of space, time, speed and distance. For this, I collaborated with the gifted producer, Jim Batt, as well as several cinematographers. When I first began work on Cistern, I had no intention of trying to capture any particular idea. It wasn’t until I began hearing the music played back to me, that certain memories from my childhood flooded back to me. Strangely, it took an empty water tank to bring me back to my childhood at sea.
