What is it really like to be an immigrant?
Žan Tetičkovič, better known as Jean John, shares his own story with his audio-visual experience entitled “The Port of Life”. The audience will live through a personal story of immigration and acculturation told through original music: an 80 minute long suite divided into eight movements. Drawing from both the jazz and classical soundworlds, each movement represents a psychological stage in Jean John’s personal journey of trying to find and establish his place in a new culture.
BIOGRAPHY
Žan Tetičkovič, born in Ptuj, Slovenia is a New York City based drummer, educator and multiple award-winning composer. An alumni of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, from which he graduated in 2015 and a 2017 recipient of the ASCAP Johnny Mandel composition prize, he is also a recipient of the 2012, 2014 and 2017 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award and has performed at renowned festivals and venues with notable artists and acts around the world. Tetičkovič mainly draws inspirations for his compositions from global issues, with his world music project Balchemy, philanthropic project Oasis (2014), and The Port of Life, a personal confession of an immigration on a path of acculturation. Tetičkovič is currently composing his first “climate change” classical symphony and has been commissioned by the National Theater of Slovenia to compose an opera about islamophobia entitled Alamut, which is set to premiere in 2020. We his new trio, featuring pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall in 2017, he is later this year also planning to release his new record,“A Love Lane Nocturne”.
