About this Program
Thursday, June 2nd 10pm
The soul of the Spanish guitar runs in Pablo Villegas’s blood. A native of La Rioja, Spain, Pablo is praised for performances as charismatic as they are intimate. His “virtuosic playing characterized by its vividly shaded colors and irresistible exuberance” (The New York Times), have made him one of the most sought-after soloists by today’s foremost stages.
Lauded internationally from a young age, he has appeared with renowned orchestras and at festivals around the world in more than 30 countries, becoming the youngest of his generation to perform with the New York Philharmonic. Cultural ambassador to the prestigious Vivanco Foundation and Museum, Villegas has performed for the Dalai Lama and the Spanish Royal Family.
More than any other instrument, the guitar defines the common musical heartbeat of Spain and the Americas. The Spanish guitar is one of the only instruments that are wholly linked to one country and its culture – and yet it has become the most popular instrument in the world, now found in all musical styles and genres!
For his debut performance at the National Sawdust, join Pablo on a musical journey exploring the passionate rhythms and rasgueados from Spain to the sensual Brazilian music and the nostalgic tango.
