Internationally acclaimed Korean ensemble Black String joins forces with a roster of New York City luminaries for an evening of intense cross-cultural improvisation. Featuring an array of contemporary Western instruments alongside traditional Korean ones, Black String fearlessly melds music of the past and present into an intoxicating style that has won them numerous awards and seen them featured on platforms around Asia, Europe, and North America. Sharing the stage with them will be clarinetist Marty Ehrlich, violinist Gregor Huebner, guitarist Jonathan Goldberger, percussionist and arranger Satoshi Takeishi. Black String seeks a new sound that can incorporate a variety of expressions in traditional music, as well as harmonize with other expressions in world music. This new sound will be interpreted by artists who embrace traditional music as well as jazz, reflecting both composed and improvised creations. The group features Yoon Jeong Heo (geomungo), Jean Oh (electric guitar), Aram Lee (daegeum, yanggeum), and Min Wang Hwang (ajaeng, janggu). Black String especially focuses on improvisation as an important aspect of Korean traditional music and attempts to create a unique language through Asian intuition and musical idioms.
The group was founded in 2011 as part of government sponsored Korea-UK cultural exchange program titled “UK Connection”. Black String has performed at WOMEX 2016, the London Jazz Festival, Winter Jazzfest, and many more world-renowned festivals and venues. As the band performs, amplified bursts of sound of the geomungo (6-stringed zither) and Korean bamboo flutes, the fierce quake of Korean traditional percussion, and unpredictable melodic incursions of jazz guitar will captivate all your senses.

Satoshi Takeishi — drummer, percussionist, and arranger — is a native of Mito Japan. He studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Berklee, he developed an interest in the music of South America and went to live in Colombia following the invitation of a friend. He spent four years there and forged many musical and personal relationships. One of the projects he worked on while in Colombia was “Macumbia”, with composer and arranger Francisco Zumaque, in which traditional, jazz, and classical music were combined. With this group, he performed with the Bogota Symphony Orchestra in a series of concerts honoring the music of the most popular composer in Colombia, Lucho Bermúdez. In 1986, he returned to the US, where he began work as an arranger in Miami. In 1987, he produced “Morning Ride” for jazz flutist Nestor Torres on Polygram Records. His interest expanded to the rhythms and melodies of the Middle East, where he studied and performed with Armenian American oud master Joe Zeytoonian. Since moving to New York in 1991, he has performed and recorded with many musicians, such as Ray Barretto, Carlos “Patato” Valdes, Eliane Elias, Marc Johnson, Eddie Gomez, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Anthony Braxton, Mark Murphy, Herbie Mann, Paul Winter Consort, Rabih Abou-Khalil, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band, Erik Friedlander, and Pablo Ziegler, to name a few. He continues to explore multi-cultural, electronic, and improvisational music with local musicians and composers in New York.
Guitarist Jonathan Goldberger spent most of his youth on the outskirts of the Everglades in Florida. From there, he migrated west to the Rockies (where he studied with musical guru Art Lande and played and toured with the cult spacey bluesy Fat Mama) before finding his way to Brooklyn in 2001. He has worked extensively in both the music and film worlds, including composing and producing the music for the award winning feature films Trans and The Hawk is Dying. He performs and tours with artists and bands including Red Baraat, Jim Black, and Joe Russo, among many others. His most recent recordings range from projects with the acoustic collective Surface to Air and Red Baraat to an upcoming organ trio release.
