Burnt Sugar Arkestra

About the Show
“The group’s purpose is unmistakable: to shake things up, your booty included.” – Carlo Wolff, Jazztimes.com
“a fleet-footed big band, sliding and swaggering through galactic R&B, brawny jazz and electric funk like a Sun Ra-size spin” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone
Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, the provocative mashup big band led by Village Voice icon Greg Tate and bassist Jared Nickerson, “caramelizes” jazz composer Max Roach’s “Freedom Now” suite with Burnt Sugar’s Greatest Hits (1999-2017).
This wild show will focus on the timely and searing social-justice-seeking songs of Max Roach and Abby Lincoln from the 1960s, also dropping in a couple of the band’s own greatest hits (why not?) or in Burnt Sugar speak: “Groiddest Schizznits.”
